What should you know about Hungary?

The importance of Hungary as a centre of cultural and business activities in Central and Eastern Europe can hardly be overestimated. Its importance has significantly increased since the political and economic changes of the late 80s and early 90s of the past century and since the county’s EU accession in 2004.
Hungary is proud of its history. Although oppressed by foreign invaders several times and for long periods during its one-thousand years of existence, the nation not only survived, but always managed to excel in one field or other. It gave fine musicians (Franz Liszt, Béla Bartók, Zoltán Kodály, to mention only the most famous composers) and outstanding scholars (János Bolyai, the brilliant mathematician, was Hungarian, John von Neumann and a number of Nobel prize winners were of Hungarian origin) to the world.
Now when the country has regained its independence and is building a democratic and more prosperous society, we hope that the country will once again be an important centre of science and learning.
Many languages are spoken in Europe; the language used in Hungary is Hungarian, quite different from other European languages, but many people  especially the young ones  speak foreign languages, especially English.
